Network and Permissions

Most Camera Bridge issues stem from network or permission problems. This guide walks through diagnosing and fixing them.

Local Network Permission

Camera Bridge needs Local Network permission to find and communicate with cameras on your network.

Granting Permission

  1. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Local Network
  2. Make sure Camera Bridge is in the list and toggled On
  3. If it's not there, open Camera Bridge and try to add a camera — macOS will ask for permission
  4. Click Allow when prompted

Checking Permission

If you're not sure Camera Bridge has permission:

  1. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Local Network
  2. Find Camera Bridge in the list
  3. If it's toggled off, turn it on
  4. Restart Camera Bridge

If Permission Was Denied

If you tapped "Don't Allow" earlier:

  1. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Local Network
  2. Remove Camera Bridge from the list (click the minus icon)
  3. Restart Camera Bridge
  4. Try to add a camera — you'll be asked again
  5. This time, click Allow

Network Connectivity

Check Your Mac's Network

  1. Open System Preferences › Network
  2. Click your active network (Wi-Fi or Ethernet)
  3. Verify it shows a green "Connected" status
  4. Note the IP address (looks like 192.168.1.x)

Check Camera Network

  1. Open the camera's app or web interface
  2. Go to network settings
  3. Verify the camera has an IP address on the same network as your Mac
  4. The first three numbers should match (e.g., 192.168.1.x)

Verify Network Connection Between Mac and Camera

Open Terminal and run:

bash
ping camera-ip-address

Replace camera-ip-address with your camera's IP (e.g., ping 192.168.1.100).

  • If you get replies, the connection works
  • If you get "No route to host," the camera is unreachable (wrong network or offline)

Firewall Issues

Check macOS Firewall

  1. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Firewall
  2. If it's on, click Options
  3. Make sure Block all incoming connections is OFF
  4. If it's on, turn it off (this blocks HomeKit accessory connections)

Router Firewall

If you have a separate router firewall:

  1. Check that RTSP (port 554) is allowed to your camera
  2. Check that mDNS (port 5353) is allowed for discovery
  3. Consider temporarily disabling firewall rules to test
  4. If HomeKit works with firewall off, add specific allow rules back

VPN or Proxy Issues

If you use a VPN on your Mac:

  1. Local network access may be blocked
  2. Disable the VPN temporarily to test
  3. If Camera Bridge works without VPN, you may need to configure the VPN to allow local network access

Network Isolation

Some networks (especially with multiple VLANs) separate devices:

Symptoms

  • Camera discovery finds nothing
  • Adding by address fails with "not reachable"
  • Device shows as offline but is actually on the network

Solutions

  1. Verify the Mac and camera are on the same network segment
  2. Check your router for VLAN settings
  3. Try putting both on the main network (not guest or IoT network)
  4. Disable any isolation rules temporarily

Guest Network

Cameras on a guest network usually can't communicate with your Mac:

  1. Move the camera to your main network
  2. Or add both Mac and camera to the same guest network (if possible)
  3. Then try discovering in Camera Bridge

Microphone and Audio Permissions

For two-way audio to work:

  1. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone
  2. Make sure Camera Bridge is listed and allowed
  3. Do the same for Camera access
  4. Restart Camera Bridge

Internet Connectivity

Camera Bridge doesn't need the internet to function, but some features require it:

What Needs Internet

  • Viewing cameras from outside your home (remote access via home hub)
  • HomeKit Secure Video recording (clips upload to iCloud)
  • Camera profile downloads (setup hints for specific models)

What Works Offline

  • Live view on your local network
  • Adding cameras
  • Motion detection
  • HomeKit accessory bridge (as long as home hub is on your network)

Testing Internet on Your Mac

  1. Open a web browser
  2. Try visiting a website (like apple.com)
  3. If it works, internet is connected
  4. If it doesn't, check your Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection

Remote Access Issues

Can't View Cameras Away From Home?

  1. Make sure you have a home hub (Apple TV or HomePod mini)
  2. In Home app › Home Settings › Hubs & Bridges, verify it shows "Connected"
  3. Check that your home hub has internet access (not just local network)
  4. Make sure Camera Bridge is running on your Mac at home
  5. Your viewing device (iPhone/iPad) must be signed into the same iCloud account

Remote Access Slow?

  1. Check your home internet upload speed (should be at least 5 Mbps)
  2. Reduce video quality in Home app settings
  3. Make sure no other devices are using lots of bandwidth at home
  4. Try viewing on a different network to see if it's your home internet

Camera Locked After Wrong Password

Some cameras lock after several failed login attempts:

  1. You'll see a message in Camera Bridge: "Camera locked, try again in X minutes"
  2. Wait the specified time
  3. Or restart the camera to unlock immediately
  4. Make sure you're using the correct password (case-sensitive on some cameras)

Diagnostics for Network Issues

Camera Bridge's Diagnostics tool can help:

  1. Open Camera Bridge › Diagnostics
  2. Look for red items under Network Access or Camera Connection
  3. Click the info icon next to each red item for specific help

Testing Steps

  1. Restart router: Sometimes the network needs a fresh start (unplug for 30 seconds)
  2. Restart Mac: Flushes network caches and reconnects
  3. Restart Camera Bridge: Reconnects to the network and cameras
  4. Restart camera: Resets the camera's network connection
  5. Check firewall off: Test with macOS firewall disabled to rule it out

Still Having Issues?

  1. Open Diagnostics and note any red items
  2. Try the suggested fixes for each issue
  3. If multiple things are red, fix them in order
  4. Then try adding or connecting to a camera again
